Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about orthodontic treatment in Auburn, Maine? You’re in the right place.
Appointments
How do I schedule a consultation?
Call us at (207) 784-8587 to schedule your free consultation. We do our best to offer initial visits in the afternoon or early evening, so you have plenty of time for a thorough exam, as well as to answer any questions.
After your consultation, if you decide to move forward with braces or another recommended treatment, we will build a personalized treatment plan together and walk you through every detail before anything begins.
Once braces are placed, regular follow-up appointments are scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks so we can monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.
Financial Policy
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Mastercard, Visa, cash, money orders, and personal checks. A down payment is typically collected on the day records are taken and again when appliances are placed, both of which are applied toward your total balance. The remaining amount is automatically set up as monthly, no-interest payments.
What if I have questions about my bill?
Call us at (207) 784-8587 and ask for our Financial Administrator. We believe in real conversations with real people, and most billing questions can be resolved quickly with a single phone call.
Do you accept dental insurance?
As a courtesy, we will file the necessary insurance forms on your behalf. Please keep in mind that you are ultimately responsible for any fees charged by this office, regardless of your coverage. We are an out-of-network provider.
Your First Visit
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your initial consultation includes a full exam, during which we will discuss whether you or your child would benefit from braces or another orthodontic treatment. We may take an X-ray if specific information is needed. Questions are always welcome, at this visit and every one after it.
A few things to bring or keep in mind:
- Bring your current dental insurance card, or your subscriber number, group number, and insurance phone number if you do not have the card
- All patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
- Let us know in advance if you have any medical conditions that may be relevant to treatment, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves or joints, rheumatic fever, or similar concerns
- Let us know about any medications you are currently taking
- If your dentist has recent X-rays on file, please have them forwarded or emailed to us ahead of your visit
Your consultation is completely free.
Why Choose an Orthodontist?
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Think of it this way: you would not hire an electrician to fix a broken water pipe. You would hire the specialist trained for the job. The same logic applies to your smile.
Orthodontists are dental specialists who complete an additional two to three years of full-time education at an accredited orthodontic residency program after dental school, focused specifically on tooth movement and the guidance of facial development. That focused expertise is what separates orthodontists from general dentists when it comes to alignment, bite correction, and long-term results.
Choosing a member of the American Association of Orthodontists means choosing a verified specialist. Only orthodontists can join the AAO, and that distinction matters when it comes to your smile.
Emergencies
What if I have a problem outside of regular office hours?
If you are experiencing pain or an orthodontic emergency, we will make every effort to see you the same day. For after-hours situations, call our main number at (207) 784-8587 and follow the prompts on our answering machine. You will be connected directly with Dr. Bauer or a team member who can help.
Cancellation and No-Show Policy
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
We understand that schedules change. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give us at least 24 hours’ notice whenever possible. It helps us serve you and our other patients better.
When Should You See an Orthodontist?
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic screening at age 7. Early evaluations help identify issues like crossbites, finger habits, or developmental concerns while they are still easier to address. That said, we are happy to see kids of any age.
What are the signs that someone may need orthodontic treatment?
Beyond a straightforward desire to improve your smile, there are several signs worth paying attention to:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Finger sucking or other oral habits
- Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
- Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude, or appear recessed
- Speech difficulties
- Biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
- Protruding teeth
- Teeth that meet abnormally or do not meet at all
- Facial imbalance or asymmetry
- Grinding or clenching of teeth
If any of these sound familiar, a free consultation is a great place to start.
